Rhodes Island

Memorial Weekend on Block Island

For Summer 2017 Memorial Weekend, I opted to visit Block Island about a 3.5 to 4 hours’ drive from NJ/NY in Rhodes Island. The island is about a 10 miles radius quite small right… My sister and I walked from south to north of the island from the Ferry in just 2 days. It was such an amazing opportunity to visit another state; something majority of us Americans do not have the liberty to do too often.

In the beginning of every trip I am usually quite afraid even when the fear is often hidden behind excitement. It is impossible to know what to except since my selection are made on a whim and not referrals or actual research. I never heard of Block Island prior to my visit. Rhodes Island was simply a nearby state on the map that I haven’t visited. While searching for cities and activities, the island came up and I made the necessary arrangements. Come to think of it, I am pretty odd to say the least…

From Point Judith dock we took the first traditional ferry in the morning to the island just 35 to 45 minutes away from coast. The people, unlike in the city go out of their way to greet passerby. It was mesmerizing to see people slowing their car to wave, bikers stopping to say hello, pedestrians smiling and greeting everyone. People do not horn their cars when pedestrians walked in the middle of the street, instead they wait until the person decide to move. The town is family oriented and locals are very kind. They definitely enjoy their beauty sleep; things are not open until 11am. Between 8am and 9am there were only 2 places open the bagel shop and Persephone’s Kitchen serving breakfast.

The Island is indeed flawlessly beautiful and calming with miles of beautiful beaches, numerous bars and restaurants. There is just about enough to explore on a weekend visit and they are all free: from sightseeing the town activities, hiking the incredible natural trails; indulging the few snacks bars, restaurants and bars; relaxing on the beach. Below are just a few things that we travelled on foot but you also have the option of renting bikes or mopeds. The island is so small that finding parking is scarce.
