1st Visit to a Former USSR Territory

I must admit that I was a bit reluctant to visit Georgia, once a former USSR territory. I attempted to visit Russia and often have layovers at their main airport, and it has never been a walk in the park. When I decided to visit Georgia a part of me taught I would have the same experience, but I was certainly wrong.

Batumi
We landed in Tbilisi on Thursday around midnight. Our driver for the next 4 days John that I found on TripAdvisor was already at the entrance waiting for us. He assisted us with exchanging currency before leaving the airport. We went directly to Batimu which was a six-hour drive away. By 7am we were in Batumi Boulevard – Seaside Amusement Park, located in Batumi, Adjara region. The boulevard is in the historic part of the city, along the seaside. We rested for a bit in the car before heading for breakfast.
This year I started creating a list of traditional dishes to try for each territory I visited. At each meal we selected a few at a local restaurant selected by John. I can’t say that I enjoyed any of the meals other than plain bread. They were very salty which left me bloated and gassy throughout the day. Nonetheless they are still a must try. The dishes/snacks that I had during my stay:
• Khinkali
• Shkmeruli
• Ostri Stew
• Khachapuri Bread
• Kharcho Soup
• Lobio
• Mtsvadi
• Potato Leak Soup
• Puri bread
• Tolma
• Churchkhela Candy
After our breakfast our 1st tour guide was already at the park waiting to lead us through our escapades during which we visited the below locations:
• Batumi Tower
• Alphabet Tower: The tower symbolizes the uniqueness of the Georgian alphabet and people.
• Lighthouse
• Statue of Neptune
• Miracle Park
• Europe Square

Merisi
After spending the earlier part of the day in Batumi, the tour continued in Merisi 1.5 hours away from Batimu at our lodge located at the Eco House Merisi. On the way we stopped at waterfalls, and a winery nearby. They had other activities such as ziplining and water rafting but it was too cold for us to get in the water. The road to the lodge though beautiful looked terrifying and a bit difficult.
Our cottage was breathtaking, comfortable with a spectacular panorama. I would suggest booking weeks in advance because the place is very popular. We missed out on our original cottage but eventually settled for the Lova cottage suitable for up to 4 people.
We enjoyed taking bubble baths in the jacuzzi on the deck and using the swing at the edge of the mountain. We elected for a sumptuous breakfast at the jacuzzi with shisha and wine. Every dish was made fresh from the owner’s farm. Evenings were extremely cold; the cottage had a small fire pit and in the middle of the night we had to go up to the main lodge to get additional firewood to heat our cottage. John also stayed with us in a different cottage. Which was convenient when we needed to visit sites and head back to Tbilisi.

Tbilisi
Two days later we were on the way back to Tbilisi after a six-hour drive, we went directly to Chreli Abano for a chocolate and candle wax massage. We also rented N11 VIP Room and added a body scrub.
The following day John was busy, so he sent his wife to give us a tour of the city. Throughout the entire day we visited the below sites. Before heading to dinner in the evening we decided to visit Gulo’s Thermal Spa; unlike the bathhouse mentioned above it is very traditional and not as clean but the body scrub was much better.
Sites to visit in Tbilisi:
• St George Monument
• Freedom Square
• Marionette Theater
• Clock Tower
• Bridge of Peace
• Mother of Georgia
• Narikala Fortress

We had a beautiful time in Tbilisi. It is by far one of the most affordable places I visited, and I truly loved the journey especially visiting bathhouses after a long day touring. The food was not our favorite due to the salt, but it was an experience. On to the next escapade…
